The Australian skipper tried to break Rohit’s concentration when he was caught on stump mic telling short-leg fielder, Aaron Finch that he would pledge his allegiance to Mumbai Indians if their skipper hits a six.Rohit didn’t take the bait and went on to hit a half-century – a knock that saw no sixes from the blade of the MI skipper as India posted a big total of 443 for 7 declared. Before the start of play on Friday, Rohit said he had heard the banter and that he had told his teammate and Rajasthan Royals skipper, Ajinkya Rahane that Mumbai Indians would buy Paine if the Australia captain hits a century during the MCG Test.As Tim Paine failed to make a half-century, let alone reach the three-figure mark in both the innings of the ongoing Test, the Mumbai Indians took to Twitter and joined the banter. The IPL franchise uploaded a photo of Tim Paine with his second innings score of 26 and “Mission Failed” as caption embedded on it.advertisementIf he (Paine) gets a hundred here, I will put in a word about him to my boss at Mumbai Indians and we’ll buy him. Looks like he’s a fan of Mumbai.” – @ImRo45Tim Paine: c Pant b Jadeja – 26 (67) #CricketMeriJaan #AUSvIND pic.twitter.com/c36xdjZRYWMumbai Indians (@mipaltan) December 29, 2018Meanwhile, Australia opener Aaron Finch had insisted that it was good banter and that Rohit had failed to fall into the trap when he was batting on the second day.”We were just trying to have a bit of banter with Rohit. I asked Rohit if we brought mid on up if he’d take us on and go into IPL mode and he didn’t take the bait, unfortunately. It was just a bit of good fun, a bit of banter. It was a long time out there,” Finch said.Over the third and the fourth day of the MCG Test, Paine and India wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant continued their sledging war.”Tell you what big MS is back in the one-day squad. Should get this bloke down to Hurricanes… They need a batter. Fancy that extend you Aussie holiday, beautiful town Hobart too… get him a waterfront apartment,” Paine had chirped at Pant on Friday.Responding to Paine’s comments, Pant called the Australia skipper “a temporary captain” when the latter was batting on Saturday.Despite all the on-field banter, India have come up with a professional approach in the ongoing Test. The visitors need only two wickets on the final day to win their first-ever Boxing Day Test in Australia while the hosts need to bat out an entire day or score 141 runs to avoid conceding an unassailable lead in the series. Also Read | Pant’s banter with Lyon caught on stump mic: “You don’t want to come tomorrow for nothing”Also Read | Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami: Trio creates history in 2018For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
