A company has been selected to design a major expansion of the emergency department at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax that will see it double in size. William Nycum and Associates was awarded the design tender today, July 30. “It’s great to see the work progress on this important project,” said Health and Wellness Minister Randy Delorey. “This expansion will mean a larger, more modern emergency department for our dedicated health professionals to work and continue to provide quality care to children and their families across Atlantic Canada.” The larger emergency department will help address the increase in patients being seen. There were more than 33,000 visits to the emergency department last year. There has been a 14 per cent increase in visits over the last two years. It will also better meet the needs of patients with complex cases and mental health concerns, and encourage more innovation among care providers. Government is investing $1.4 million in the design development phase, which is expected to be completed by next summer, then construction will begin. The IWK Health Centre is the Maritime region’s leading health care and research centre dedicated to the well-being of women, children, youth and families.
