Although the earliest known marsupial has just been found in China1, Richard L. Cifelli and Brian M. Davis, writing in the Dec. 12 issue of Science2 consider the phylogenetic trees of marsupial and placental mammals conflicting and puzzling. Problems include (emphasis added):Switcheroo: Fossil marsupials are predominately found in North America, but living ones are primarily found in Australia and South America. “This geographical switch remains unexplained. The timing of the split between eutherians [placental mammals] and metatherians [marsupials] is also controversial.”Known Bones: “To date, the geological record has yielded few fossils that bear directly on the origin of marsupials.”Good News, Bad News: This new, exciting, earliest fossil marsupial was found in China, but “The balance of paleontological and morphological data suggests that the last common ancestor of metatherians and eutherians was Laurasian” (i.e., European-North American].Divergence and Convergence: “Clearly, the relative successes of the two groups differed widely on the two continents. Yet, the early representatives of both groups seem to have been highly similar ecologically–most were small, insectivorous, and probably nocturnal. This puzzle remains to be resolved.” It is also commonly known that many marsupials, such as the marsupial wolf, have placental look-alikes, yet very different reproductive systems.DNA Doubts: “Molecular data have yielded conflicting results for the timing of the metatherian-eutherian split.” Molecular estimates are usually much older than fossil estimates.The Gap Theory: “These divergence estimates have implications for the relative timing of most other divergences on the mammalian family tree. However, they are difficult to reconcile with the (admittedly imperfect) mammalian fossil record. When the entire tree is considered (top panel), it becomes clear that large gaps in the fossil record (most with durations of more than 30 million years) must be inferred to explain the distribution of each group represented.”Tooth Truth: Paleontologists attempt to classify the groups based on teeth, but its a difficult job: “But such criteria are not applicable to dentally more primitive fossils. Furthermore, they are of limited utility when it comes to assessing which biological niches they might have occupied, beyond the suggestion that most early metatherians fed on animal tissues ranging from insects to meat, depending on body size.”Why We Gotta Figure This Out: “The paleontological evidence is important because it provides an independent test for dates based on molecular data. It also provides some basis for calculating the rates of change of skeletal (and dental) morphology and molecular structure. Given the far-reaching implications for evolutionary studies, it is crucial that the widely differing estimates of divergence time are reconciled and that the place of origin of both metatherians and eutherians is further elucidated with fossil discoveries. MSNBC News, as usual, is all agog at this wonderful new discovery and what it tells us about evolution. Meanwhile, the Europeans are all flustered trying to drum up interest to join the “Assembling the Tree of Life” bandwagon (see 10/30/2002 headline). A letter to the editor in the same issue of Science by two UK scientists moans that Europe doesn’t seem to see the connection between evolutionary studies and practical benefits:Perhaps the best explanation is that AToL is still seen to be about taxonomy, a domain that urgently needs rebranding if it wants to attract funds for big programs such as the Genome Project. Only when the linkage of the tree of life to conservation, genomics, and DNA-based identification for medicine and ecology is made obvious will the project be put in its proper perspective. Taxonomic study is fundamental to all areas of science, but as demonstrated by the projects funded by the NSF program, it is only a starting point. A great deal more needs to be done to move modern evolutionary science to the heart of society’s efforts to understand the living world and make its utilization sustainable and effective.” (Emphasis added.)Notice how they conflate evolutionary study with taxonomy. Taxonomy is good. Linnaeus, the father of taxonomy, was a creationist. We talked to SunGard Availability Services‘s Managing Principal of Consulting Services Dr. Mickey Zandi, who says that although data center hiring isn’t in crisis yet, it’s already difficult to find qualified people. It also notes a steady rise in data center related job postings over the past few years on Indeed.com.“There is a trend I’ve been observing for the past year or year and a half – managers are challenged to find operational staffing for data centers,” says Zandi. “Many data center workers are retiring, but have never been involved in knowledge transfer to the younger generation.”Zandi also says that consolidation is resulting in more complex resources. Storage, network and computing are becoming integrated, which saves data centers money but makes staffing more difficult. Training for these skills is extensive and expensive.Companies should continue the path of virtualization and consolidation but not forget training, Zandi says. “Start having your existing staff cross-train in other domains.” He also recommends that companies invest in certifications and trainings for employees. He suggests building lab-environments where employees can test new technologies and do hands-on training.Zandi also says that managers are going to have to lower the barrier of entry in terms of the experience in cross-domains. Workers with deep knowledge in one area should be valued even if they don’t have broad cross-domain experience. These are the sort of workers you need to have cross-training each other.According to Zandi, certifications are going to play a greater role in data center staffing decisions. He suggests that workers that want to stay viable focus on getting cloud-related certifications. He says certifications from Cisco, EMC and VMWare are most important and notes that Cisco’s Nexus platform is particularly hot.The most important thing for workers to do now, he says, is research and learn other domains. MILWAUKEE — New Bucks owners Marc Lasry and Wes Edens admit they may have made some errors in luring Jason Kidd to Milwaukee.That doesn’t mean they aren’t happy to have him as Milwaukee’s coach.“Our one goal is to hire people to run it, that know what they’re doing,” Edens said. “Jason is someone I’ve admired as a player. He did a great job managing the Nets this year and we think he’s the best young coaching talent in basketball.”Kidd, who was formally introduced July 2 at the BMO Harris Bradley Center, said there were no hard feelings over his abrupt and surprising departure from Brooklyn, where he won 44 games and reached the second round of the playoffs in his first season as a coach.Kidd dismissed the suggestion that he left after being turned down in seeking control of the Nets’ basketball operations department. And he said he had no plans to seek a similar role in Milwaukee, where General Manager John Hammond is under contract through the 2015-16 season.“They are not true,” Kidd said. “It’s not about power. You guys ran with that. It’s not about power. As I was introduced, I’m the coach.”Brooklyn agreed to deal Kidd to Milwaukee for second-round draft picks in 2015 and 2019. The Bucks fired Larry Drew, who had no indication he wouldn’t be back for a second season.The whole affair was messy and played out in the media for days before the deal was announced, overshadowing the positive buzz surrounding the Bucks’ selection of Duke star Jabari Parker with the No. 2 overall pick.Lasry said it was wrong to not bring Hammond into the loop earlier in the process, which began last week when the owners sought permission from the Nets to speak with Kidd. Lasry and Kidd are friends.“We were asked to keep it confidential,” Lasry said. “In retrospect, that was a mistake. I would tell you that it was very much newness. We’ve learned a lot in this process. Our view, and it hasn’t changed from the beginning, is that all the basketball operations goes through John. In this process, we learned we made a mistake.”Lasry and Edens said once the initial discussion took place and news leaked out, Hammond took over the negotiation with Nets GM Billy King.If Hammond felt threatened by Kidd’s presence, he wasn’t showing it.“The last four days have been have been great for this organization,” Hammond said. “I’ve never felt the kind of excitement that’s surrounding our team — people are talking about the Bucks and want to know what’s going on with our team — and that’s a great thing.”Kidd spoke confidently about Hammond, who spent seven seasons as an assistant to Pistons’ GM Joe Dumars before joining the Bucks in April 2008. “He is great. He’s a leader,” Kidd said. “He understands the league. He’s been doing it for a long time. I trust him like no other.”Kidd didn’t offer much explanation of his reasoning for taking the job in Milwaukee, where he inherits a team that finished a league-worst 15-67 but adds Parker to a group that includes 19-year-old Greek forward Giannis Antetokounpo, forward John Henson and center Larry Sanders.He downplayed questions about moving from the NBA’s largest market to its smallest.“I’ve played in big markets and I’ve played in small markets,” Kidd said. “It’s not about the market, it’s about being able to teach and I have a great opportunity here in Milwaukee to be part of a young, talented roster.”Edens and Lasry, both New York investment firm executives, recently purchased the team from former U.S. Sen. zoomImage Courtesy: Pixabay (Pixabay Licence) Short-sea container services could provide alternative capacity between the UK and EU to alleviate possible congestion at the Port of Dover post-Brexit, a study by shipping consultancy Drewry showed.These latest findings follow an earlier Brexit briefing and resilience study by Drewry which concluded that the Port of Dover had the capacity to cope with moderate Brexit disruption.Using this ‘alternative mode’ assumption, Drewry sought to understand the current container services available at UK Ports, their connectivity with EU Ports and to examine what container shipping lines could do to accommodate additional volumes by understanding current service capacity levels and how easily additional capacity, if required, might be deployed.“In this second phase of our short-sea analysis we have turned our attention to alternative capacity and congestion mitigation,” said Tim Power, head of Drewry Maritime Advisors.Powel explained that container shipping line services not only have the capacity, options and flexibility to handle additional container volumes in the event of disruption to cross-Channel freight services but also container terminals in the UK have the capacity to meet the additional throughput demands.The study highlighted that of the 2.5 million trailers going via Dover up to 20% could possibly shift to another mode of transport. Also, the study showed that there are four ways that container shipping lines could cater for this demand, namely, making use of spare capacity on existing services; increasing frequency on existing services; increasing vessel sizes on existing services; and launching new services.Furthermore, the study noted that UK container terminals in 11 ports have a combined spare capacity of 5.9 million TEUs, sufficient to handle this additional volume and provide wide geographical coverage.
