Letters to the Editor for Saturday, Nov. 9

first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, OpinionSch’dy County Dems  take the low roadLike many of you, I was disgusted by several political flyers sent out by the Schenectady County Democratic Committee (SCDC) over the past few weeks.Their propaganda attacked Yasmine Syed with personal and unsubstantiated allegations and attacks. For the record, I consider myself progressive.I have marched in Washington, D.C., and participated in local protests and letter-writing campaigns.I work for immigrant justice. I have even gone door-to-door and made phone calls in support of Democratic Party candidates.I’m dismayed to see Trumpian tactics playing out in our local elections. What happened to the Democratic Party? What happened to “When they go low, we go high?”Now that the election is over, I believe we need let the SCDC know how we feel. For me, I find their conduct a betrayal of our values. I thought the Democratic Party was all about integrity and compassion. Elections should be about issues, not vile political attacks. Please join me in writing to SCDC, PO Box 9273, Schenectady, NY 12309.Jon LemelinNiskayunaLiberals should help, not hinder, TrumpIsn’t it time the liberals stop wasting taxpayers’ money on President Trump and help him with all the problems we have with our enemies? He is the only one that has the nerve to go up against North Korea, China and Iran. He is the only one to have the nerve to place tariffs on them.We are making them rich while we stood by and did nothing. The only reason they want to impeach him is because he isn’t a yes man. He stands up against the liberals.Have you noticed the unemployment rate? The liberals are like a pack of lions tracking down one animal. They can’t go one on one.James MaxfieldScotiaThreat to republic has a familiar ringRev. Jim Jones (1931-78) — civil rights’ advocate, reverend, cult leader, sex addict, drug addict, deranged at the end of his life —  took over 900 of his followers with him.One can see elements of Jim Jones-ism in the body politic today. The victims of Jim Jones’ evil were, for the most part, poor people looking for a better life. These are the same type of people supercilious politicians exploit. The Rev. Jim viewed America as racist, capitalism as bad, socialism as good, redistribution of wealth is good.He encouraged a violent end for then -President Nixon. Today it is President Trump who is under the gun. In a Broadway production, a President Trump lookalike was assassinated. Et tu, Brute?  A comedian carries a mockup of President Trump’s severed head. The violent death of Caesar heralded the demise of the Roman Republic. America the republic is about gone. President Trump’s premature removal from office would complete the process. When partisan members of alphabet sedition club (DOJ, CIA, FBI, etc.) openly subvert presidential authority, can it be long before the military steps forward? When the military comes out of the shadows, it will be “Seven Days in May.”      Brutus is lurking in the wings. Drink the Kool-Aid.Edmond DayRotterdam The U.S. House of Representatives just took important action for people living with Alzheimer’s disease. As someone whose mother died of Alzheimer’s and who has worked with several individuals under 65 with Alzheimer’s disease, I want to thank Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Schuylerville) for supporting the House passage of the Younger-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease Act of 2019 (H.R. 1903 / S. 901), through the Reauthorization of the Older Americans Act.According to the Alzheimer’s Association, an estimated 200,000 Americans under age 65 are living with Alzheimer’s disease. Yet currently, because of their young age, they are not eligible for support and service programs available to older Americans. The Younger-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease Act would fix this and give them access to nutritional programs, respite services for family caregivers and other services to enhance quality of life. The Senate must now follow the House action and pass this important bill. To learn more about this disease and how you can join the fight to end Alzheimer’s, visit HinrichsCohoesThe writer is associate director of advocacy for the Alzheimer’s Association.Legislature shouldn’t ban youth footballSo the lawmakers here in the state of New York want to ban youth football because of reasons of safety and other reasons. But that is not the lawmakers’ say. That should be a talk between a mom or dad and a child and not the lawmaker. If the lawmakers of this state were to ban youth football, what will they try and ban next — any kind of youth sport? If the lawmakers ban youth football, the only thing left for the youth of this state will be to join up with the gangs and whatnot. No mom or dad would want their child to join the really bad gangs in this state.Lawmakers of this state, stop sticking your noses where they do not belong and do your job that we, the people, elected you to do. Please stop trying to ruin the youth of this state by banning youth football.Anthony CarotaSchenectadyNo good Democrat is supportive of TrumpI must take issue with Vincent Belardo’s Oct. 27 letter and his statement that he’s a “good Democrat.”No sir, there’s no way you can be a good Democrat while supporting President Trump for reelection. The Democratic Party platform is the opposite of what Trump stands for. And while you may be a registered Democrat, you cannot ever be considered a “good” one given your current views.Mr. Belardo states he was a war veteran and for that we are grateful. But his statement that he sees what Trump is trying to do is misguided.I think he and those who support Trump are anything but enlightened to the truth. The facts are out there, and his last two years in office have been nothing but chaos and divisiveness. He has broken the laws and defied the Constitution and disgraced his time in office. He’s a joke to our allies and a puppet to our enemies. He’s not out to “protect” us, as Mr. Belardo claims.Trump is a selfish, self-interested man who only protects himself and seeks only to profit off of us. He has no respect for the rule of law, as his actions and words proven. He’s a disgrace not only as a president, but just as a human being. People who continue to deny the evidence that’s right in front of them put the future of our children and grandchildren in jeopardy, and I find that inexcusable. Never mind making “America Great Again.” Let’s just make “America America Again.”Connie CartwrightScotiaSocialism is not in best interests of U.S.Regarding Norman Perazzo’s Nov. 2 letter (“How to destroy the U.S. from within“), I believe he is absolutely right. His nine points about how to destroy the United States from within are happening right now all around this country.Americans had better wake up and recognize that our future could be in jeopardy. Young people had better study history and see that socialism pushed by Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders is not in our best interests.Helen MartinGlenville Bill will help younger Alzheimer’s victimscenter_img Dems’ only goals are power and controlSpeaker Nancy Pelosi got one thing right. She recently declared, “What is at stake in all of this is nothing less than our democracy.”What she got wrong is that the Democrats’ obsession to regain power is the real danger to the republic. The Democrats have this insatiable quest for power by any means necessary. The Russian collusion hoax and the more recent impeachment fever are recent attempts to undermine our president and, by doing so, trying to influence elections.Getting overshadowed, and what should be even more disconcerting however, is their sheer willingness to discard our Constitution. It’s these attacks that all citizens should weigh carefully, understanding that many Democratic actions and viewpoints are usurping your fundamental rights. Examples include, but are not limited to, the Second, Fifth and 12th amendments. Most obvious is the suggestion of a governmental buyback to the unabashed outright confiscation of firearms. Another surrounds the idea of due process, which protects the rights of the accused and is the cornerstone of American jurisprudence. A recent example of this came at the confirmation hearings for Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The cultural #MeToo movement superseded proper moral and legal conscience. Our own senator, Kirsten Gillibrand, exclaimed “I believe her” before any of the facts presented themselves. Let not the facts get in the way of the preferred narrative. Lastly, some Democrats want to abolish the Electoral College, since it does not aid the coastal elites and large Democratic urban areas to control elections.Their real purpose? Power and control.John MyersSchenectadyStalin policies similar to Democrats’ plansAm I the only one who recognizes the following similarity of ideas?I will reference chapter 10 of the Soviet constitution.Article 120: Citizens of the U.S.S.R. have the right to maintenance in old age and also in the case of sickness or loss of capacity to work. This right is ensured by the extensive development of social insurance of workers and employees at state expense, free medical service for the working people and the provision of a wide network of health resorts for the use of the working people.Article 121: Citizens of the U.S.S.R. have the right to education. This right is ensured by universal, compulsory elementary education; by education, including higher education, being free of charge; by the system of state stipends for the overwhelming majority of students in the universities and colleges; by instruction in schools being conducted in the native language, and by the organization in the factories, state farms, machine and tractor stations and collective farms of free vocational, technical and agronomic training for the working people. In 1936, Stalin beat the Democrats to these ideas.Michael SheedySchenectadyAre we all powerless against Spectrum?Well my good friends at Spectrum have done it again. I just got my statement for November, and for no apparent reason, explanation or notification, my service went up $10. It’s the second time in one year that this has happened. They say reach out to your legislators to take action. Yeah right. It appears that they must be as powerless as everyone else when it comes to these extortionists.Daniel LindsaySchenectadyMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Thruway tax unfair to working motoristsFoss: Should main downtown branch of the Schenectady County Public Library reopen?EDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationEDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homesGov.
